NATURE THAT NURTURES: Five Power Plants that Can Boost Your Skin's Health

We evaluate a lot of new products for Luvi Beauty and it has been an ongoing education.   And, with constant innovation in skincare, we’re often surprised and delighted to learn about the power and efficacy of plant-based ingredients.

It’s amazing to discover how much nature can nurture.  In some instances, we’re talking about plants that we’ve grown up with in our own communities.  In other instances, we’re talking about more exotic plants that have been used for centuries by different cultures from all around the world.  This snapshot reflects both scenarios.  We’ve unearthed five (5) plants that pack a powerful punch as skincare ingredients.

Kigelia Africana is a medicinal plant indigenous to Africa.  For centuries, the so-called “sausage tree” has been an invaluable resource for traditional healers across different African cultures.

The fruits, leaves, bark, and roots of the tree are widely used to treat a variety of skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, cuts, and scars.  The tree is also recognized for improving skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Your favorite summer fruit may be delicious and refreshing but did you know it also has great beauty benefits?  A unique oil is extracted from cold-pressed sun-dried watermelon seeds.  The process is common in West Africa where the oil is referred to as Ootanga oil or Kalahari oil.

Watermelon seed oil is high in unsaturated fatty acids and loaded with essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals which enrich hair and skin.  And, compared to the seed oil of other melons, watermelon seed oil has significant antioxidant activity.  The oil hydrates the skin and protects it from the oxidative stress that causes pre-mature aging.

The beautiful lotus flower has cultural significance in many Asian cultures.  While the lotus is the national flower of India and Vietnam, the root helps support skin health.

The lotus root is rich in antioxidants and is also known to provide intense hydration.  This nourishing moisture increases skin elasticity, minimizes the look of fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots for a smooth, vibrant complexion.

Geranium oil is extracted from the stems, leaves, and flowers of the geranium plant.  This oil’s use goes back to ancient Egypt where it was used to promote beautifully radiant skin.  Given its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, geranium oil has the power to improve skin health.

Today geranium oil is used to treat a multitude of skin concerns including acne and dermatitis.  Geranium oil also has the power to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
